Sulwe (English version)

This heart-warming book gives children courage and shows that every skin tone is beautiful, that you are beautiful.

Sulwe was born midnight coloured. She is darker than everyone in her family. She is darker than everyone in her school - and tries everything to look different. But then she embarks on a magical journey with her two sisters, Day and Night, and learns to appreciate her beauty.

Based on her personal story, Oscar-winning author Lupita Nyong'o has created a new heroine for children like Sulwe who shows the value of self-acceptance. In the process, she lovingly critiques Colorism, society's preference for people with lighter skin tones, in a child-friendly way.

Lupita Nyong'o is a Kenyan-Mexican actress and writer. She is known from films such as Queen of Katwe, Black Panther, and Us. For her role as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave, Nyong'o became the first African actress who is also Black to win an Oscar. Her children's book Sulwe was a New York Times bestseller, won the NAACP Image Award, the Coretta Scott King Award, and even received its own Netflix episode in the series Bookmarks.

About the publisher

Mentor Verlag is an independent, owner-managed publishing house from Berlin - recently also part of the circle of friends of the Kurt Wolff Foundation.

We, the two young publishers Philipp and Niclas, co-founded the start-up campus "Factory" eight years ago and love building communities. As a publishing house, we're all about community and great books - for kids and adults. We care about topics around children's education, sustainability, healthy living, but also about social coexistence as a whole.

We've had the pleasure of working with authors like Francesca Cavallo, Ronja von Rönne, Jimmy Kimmel, and Lupita Nyong'o.
